The action takes place at the time of the military coup in Turkey in 1980 . Mustafa and Esma are a happily married young couple with a three year old daughter. They earn their living as factory workers. The two are not particularly interested in politics, rather they are concerned that the landlord wants to throw them out of the apartment. Suddenly, events roll over. The military is staging a coup and Mustafa won't come home one day. Days of waiting and anxiety begin and Esma finally learns that Mustafa has been arrested. Allegedly he is said to have worked as a political activist under the code name Şehmuz . Together with many other women and men whose relatives and husbands have disappeared, she stands in front of the police station every day in the hope of receiving a message from her husband. When Mustafa suddenly and severely traumatized at the door after 22 days of torture, Esma realizes that nothing will be the same as it used to be.
Reviews
- "Eve Dönüs" with Sibel Kekilli revisits the dark chapter of the 1980 military coup. The story of a simple worker who can no longer escape general suspicion alternates between intolerable scenes of torture and interrogation and sequences pervaded by evil gallows humor. ( Qantara )
