Even Christophersen Ulving (born August 15, 1863 in Vega , Helgeland , † August 3, 1952 in Åsgårdstrand ) was a Norwegian painter.

Life

Ulving was born the son of the boat builder and farmer Christopher Evensen Ulving. At the age of 18 he traveled to Kristiania to learn his trade with Wilhelm von Krogh . In 1883/84 he was a student at Knud Bergslien's school of painting , in 1885/86 by Heinz Heim and Carl Frithjof Smith at the Art Academy in Munich, and in 1887 with William Adolphe Bouguereau at the Académie Julian in Paris. From 1900 to 1913 he lived in Sømnesøya, from 1914 until his death in Åsgårdstrand.

Ulving participated in the autumn exhibitions of 1889, 1892 and 1896. He went on trips a. a. to Lofoten , to France and in 1906 to Italy (including Genoa, Nettuno). He had solo exhibitions at Blomqvist in Oslo in 1923 and at Håndverkerforening in Tønsberg in 1937. He was in contact with Knut Hamsun , who appreciated his painting.

He was only married to Antonetta Augusta Holst and after her death to Fredrikke Johanne Knoph Qvale .

Ulving painted naturalistically, mostly motifs from Helgeland or Vestfold . He particularly knew how to depict the characteristic colors of the different seasons in diverse, often strong tones, without creating discord. His landscapes always show human activities or traces of them. He also enjoyed painting rural genre scenes in huts and living rooms.

Pictures of him hang in the royal palace, and the National Museum in Oslo recently bought two of his works, including a portrait of Knut Hamsun's daughter Victoria at the piano from 1909. He also painted altarpieces. The Lofoten Gallery in Henningsvær shows eight pictures of him .
