Young's cover version was released on February 25, 1985 and reached number 4 in the United Kingdom in March 1985 and number 40 in the German charts in May. On July 27, 1985, the song reached the top ranking in the United States. It remained his only number one hit there. At the 1986 Brit Awards , the video for Everytime You Go Away won the Best British Video award .
Paul Young's recording was made with piano , bass and electric guitar . A 7 ″ single with the single version of the song and a 12 ″ maxi with an extended version were released . Both singles contain This Means Anything as the B-side .
