Evi Nemeth (born June 7, 1940 , † after June 4, 2013 , Tasman Sea (lost)) was an American mathematician, engineer and university teacher. For almost 30 years she was also the author of the most important Unix and Linux system manuals, the so-called "Bibles", which were published in large numbers and in numerous languages. She is known as the "mother of system administration".

Life

Nemeth graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and received his PhD from the University of Waterloo in Ontario in 1971 . This was followed by teaching activities at Florida Atlantic University and the State University of New York . Since 1980 she has been an associate professor in the computer science faculty at the University of Colorado at Boulder . Between 1982 and 1986 she was responsible for the computer equipment of her college, among other things significantly involved in the supply of UNIX software and the security of the domain colorado.edu .

In 1984 she was able to identify security problems in the Diffie-Hellman key exchange , which plays an important role in modern cryptography.

Since 1998, she has worked closely with the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) at the University of California in San Diego , including as a visiting professor during a sabbatical . There she was involved in numerous publications on the analysis and stability of name servers as a critical infrastructure of the Internet, which the center carried out for ICANN. In addition, she developed an online platform to enable teachers to keep up with current technology developments.

In addition to her academic activities, she was involved in the Internet Society and for the United Nations Development Program for the introduction of Internet technologies in developing countries and in the USENIX community. She received the LISA Outstanding Achievement Award in 1995 for her achievements in the field of system administration and her commitment to students.

In 2001, Nemeth retired from the University of Colorado. She bought the sailing boat Wonderland and traveled the seas with it for years. For her participation in two editions of the UNIX manual during this time, she anchored in the vicinity of WLAN to upload her chapters.

In the summer of 2013 she wanted to cross the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand with other people on the historic schooner The Niña . After a storm, the last message from Nemeth came on the radio on June 4, 2013; on July 5, the New Zealand authorities officially abandoned the search for the boat and crew.

Evi Nemeth was mother of one son and grandmother of two grandchildren.
