Ewald Schmeken

Ewald Schmeken (born February 5, 1927 in Gladbeck ; † January 24, 2009 there ) was a German historian and sociologist .

Live and act

Ewald Schmeken came from a family of craftsmen and merchants from Gladbeck. He attended the Lambertischule in Gladbeck and the grammar school Petrinum Dorsten , but had to drop out of school because of the Second World War . After his military service, he completed an apprenticeship as a craftsman and passed the master's examination as an upholsterer and saddler as well as the Abitur. From 1956 he studied history, philosophy, sociology and German at the Universities of Cologne and Münster .

1961 Schmeken was at Albert K. Hömberg in Münster Dr. phil. PhD. His dissertation The Saxon Gogerichtsbarkeit in the area between the Rhine and Weser deals with the medieval legal history of Westphalia with regard to Gogerichte . Contemporary reviewers judged his work as "weighty", but criticized a close connection to the views and interpretations of Hömberg.

After completing his doctorate, Schmeken worked as a teacher at the Ruhrkolleg in Essen-Huttrop . In the 1970s he was at the University-Essen University as a professor nominated for Historical sociology and social history. In his research and teaching activities, he mainly dealt with questions of family and youth sociology .

In addition to his scientific work, he dealt with socio-critical problems in modern German literature and published literary works with autobiographical references. He was active in the AV Cheruscia zu Münster and in the Gladbeck CV .

Ewald Schmeken lived in Gladbeck. He was married and has a son, the television presenter Thomas Schmeken , and a daughter, the photo artist Regina Schmeken . He is buried in a family crypt in the Gladbeck central cemetery.
