Excidobates is a genus from the tree dart frog family(Dendrobatidae) with three species described. The genus is sisterly to the genus Ranitomeya .
features
The small poison dart frogs reach a head-trunk length of 16 to 27 millimeters. They have no longitudinal stripes on the side of the back. Unlike the species of the genus Ranitomeya , they lack the blue-black net markings on the ventral side. The elongated first finger and the signal spots on the underside of the thighs are characteristic. The species of the genus Ranitomeya have these spots only on the upper side of the thighs.
Occurrence
The animals are only known from a small area of the upper tributaries of the Marañón in the Amazonas region in northwestern Peru . They live at an altitude of 200 to 1500 meters above sea level.
Systematics
The genus was only established by Twomey & Brown in 2008, although the two classified species have been known since 1924. They were initially classified in the genus Dendrobates . The differences were later recognized, but could not be identified for a long time. Most recently they were placed in the genus Adelphobates .
The following species are currently classified in the genus:
As of October 23, 2017
- Excidobates mysteriosus (Myers, 1982)
- Excidobates captivus (Myers, 1982)
- Excidobates condor Almendáriz, Ron & Brito M., 2012
