Exoto is a Belgian death metal band from Mol , which was founded in 1989, disbanded around 1995 and has been active again since 2013.

history

The band was formed in the summer of 1989. In 1990 a first live demo followed under the name Waiting For The Maggots , which was followed in 1991 by a studio demo under the name And Then You Die . The demo, of which around 1,600 copies were sold, was voted demo of the month in the Dutch magazine Aardschok . Another demo followed in 1992 under the name The Fifth Season , of which two songs are included on the single Ashes ..., which was released by Midian Creations in the same year . In April 1994 the debut album Carnival of Souls was released . In April of the same year, the drummer and founding member Didier Mertens died in a traffic accident, which is why the members decided to record the audio carrier A Tribute to Didier in early 1995 . At the same time, the band was working on their second album, which was to be the first at Black Mark Production . This appeared in 1995 under the name A Thousand Dreams Ago .

In March 2013 the band got together again to play live again. In October 2014, Vic Records released the album Beyond the Depths of Hate , which was dedicated to Mertens and consists of newly recorded songs that were already included on the previously released demos and albums, and new songs. The album should be the last of the band. It was recorded in the Barnyard Studio in Lommel, Belgium from March to May 2014. The band consisted of the drummer Molly Molemans, the guitarist Flip Boonen, who also took over the bass, and the guitarist Chris Meynen.

style

Martin Popoff , in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 3: The Nineties, described the music on A Thousand Dreams Ago as professional Death Metal, which, however, is destroyed by loud and crackling drum sounds. The group mix Florida death metal with Swedish death metal and riffs , as seen from bands like Rage and Coroner . Lyrically one refers almost exclusively to topics from real life. The songs are variable in speed. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer wrote in his review of the album that the band is an important Belgian death metal band, but has never really achieved fame outside of Belgium. The music is played fast, but closer to metal than to grindcore . In addition, there is "moderately difficult croaking" vocals.
