The EXAR - European Association for the Promotion of Experimental Archeology eV ( European Association for the advancement of archeology by experiment ) is an association of international working groups and institutions for the promotion of experimental archeology .

The association was founded on August 30, 2002 under the leadership of Mamoun Fansa by various people and working groups. The purpose of the association is the promotion of experimental archeology, the promotion of contacts between scientists, experimenters as well as cultural and scientific institutions and the public as well as the promotion of education at national and European level. The occasion was the touring exhibition Experimental Archeology in Germany , conceived by the State Museum for Natural History and Prehistory in Oldenburg and shown in 30 European museums for over 14 years , which received a very wide response from the public and the archaeological experts. The exhibition made it clear that experimental archeology can provide numerous new impulses for university research.

The association publishes the scientific journal Experimental Archeology in Europe at regular intervals . The association also promotes special publications and scientific events that deal with the subjects of experimental archeology and its communication. Regular conferences with international participation have been held at various locations in Europe since 1990, i.e. before the EXAR was founded. The first EXAR conference was held in Vienna in 2003 and in the following years in Hochdorf an der Enz , Bozen , Albersdorf , Alphen aan den Rijn , Oldenburg , Berlin , Unteruhldingen , Schleswig and Brugg .
