Express InterCity Premium , EIC Premium or EIP for short , is the highest type of train offered by PKP Intercity in Poland . The connections offered with the high-speed trains of the PKP series ED250 are called Express InterCity Premium .

history

The highest class of train from PKP Intercity was the Express InterCity . After ordering 20 trains of the ED250 series from Alstom in 2011, PKP Intercity decided to introduce a new type of train, the Express Intercity Premium, for services with this high-speed train. The start of operations was planned for December 2014.

In September 2014 the prices for the tickets were published. The prices for the Express InterCity Premium are well above those of the Express InterCity and are based on those of air travel. However, with the new type of train, PKP Intercity also introduced a variable booking system that adapts the fare to demand and the booking date. Early bookers receive a discount of up to 30 percent; In addition, a very limited number of particularly low-cost savings prices are offered.

In October 2014, doubts were raised about adherence to the schedule: it became apparent that only 13 of the 17 trains would be operational in December, and there were delays in staff training and the construction of waste disposal infrastructure at the destination stations. Due to the speed restrictions on the high-speed lines, which were only allowed to travel at 160 km / h, the travel times initially hardly differed from those of the locomotive-hauled wagon trains. Since these were replaced by the Express InterCity Premium, critics complained about a hidden price increase. They currently drive up to 200 km / h.

However, when the timetable changed on December 14, 2014, the Express InterCity Premium was largely able to start as planned. The first train left Krakow Central Station at 6:05 a.m.

In December 2016, the Express InterCity Premium network will be expanded by extending the southern branches. Among other things, Gleiwitz , Zabrze ( German  Hindenburg OS ) and Rzeszów are approached.

offer

The Express InterCity Premium connects Gdansk , Gdynia and Sopot in the north of Poland with Wroclaw , Katowice and Krakow in the south of the country. The central hub is Warsaw , where all EIP trains stop. Connections are offered that start or end in Warsaw; but there are also continuous north-south connections.

The EIP is subject to reservation; Tickets cannot be purchased on the train, but only at train stations and as an online ticket . Travelers with an Interrail pass must pay a surcharge of around ten euros to use the EIP.

One drink is included in the second class fare, while passengers in the first class receive two drinks and a snack.
