Ezra Getzler (born February 2, 1962 ) is an Australian mathematician and mathematical physicist.

Getzler studied from 1979 to 1982 at the Australian National University in Canberra (bachelor's degree with distinction 1982) and then at Harvard University , where he received his doctorate in 1986 under Arthur Jaffe ( Degree theory for Wiener maps and supersymmetric quantum mechanics ). From 1986 to 1989 he was a Junior Fellow at Harvard. In 1989 he became an assistant professor and in 1993 an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . From 1997 he was Associate Professor and from 1999 Professor at Northwestern University . Among other things, he was visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn (1996) and visiting professor at the École normal supérieure (1992), the Institut Henri Poincaré (2007), the University of Nice-Antipolis, at the Imperial College London (2007 / 8) and the University of Paris VI . In 2002 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

Getzler is known for his new proof (1983) of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem with the help of supersymmetry , building on ideas of Luis Alvarez-Gaumé and Edward Witten in physics. In addition to mathematical physics, he deals with algebraic geometry, category theory and algebraic topology.

From 1982 to 1986 he was a Fulbright Fellow , 1985/1986 Alfred P. Sloan Doctoral Dissertation Fellow and from 1991 to 1993 Sloan Research Fellow . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
