Félicien Menu de Ménil
Baron Félicien Menu de Ménil (born July 16, 1860 in Boulogne-sur-Mer , † March 28, 1930 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French nobleman , music teacher, composer, Esperantist and author.
Life
Félicien came from the aristocratic de Ménil family , but was marginalized because of his choice of profession and his views. His inherited fortune allowed him a lavish lifestyle and world tour. He taught music history at the renowned École Niedermeyer music school in Paris . His compositional work includes operettas , comic operas and ballet music . As an author, he was particularly successful with his book Histoire de la danse à travers les âges (“History of dance through the ages”), which was reissued by 1980.
His personal commitment was the planned language Esperanto , for which he worked intensively as a journalist. He composed the music for Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof's poem La Espero ("The Hope"). The song is the hymn of the Esperanto movement to this day.
He was married and had a daughter.
