The Funen painters or Fynboerne were a loose Danish artist colony who settled on the island of Funen ( Fyn in Danish ) at the beginning of the 20th century . The relatives were strongly influenced by Kristian Zahrtmann , who taught at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen from 1885 to 1908 . Like Zahrtmann, they left the traditions of the Royal Danish Academy of Art behind and began to explore directions such as naturalism and realism .

history

The inner core of the Funen painters consisted of Johannes Larsen (1867–1961) from Kerteminde , Fritz Syberg and Peter Hansen , both from Faaborg . Alhed Larsen, Johannes Larsen's wife, Anna Syberg, Peter Hansen's sister and Fritz Syberg's wife, and Christine Larsen, Johannes Larsen's sister, were all artists and associated with the Funen painter, but they never received the same recognition as the men. Christine Larsen married Sigurd Swane, who also moved to Kerteminde. Møllebakken, a village near Kerteminde, became the home of Johannes and Alhed Larsen. It soon became a meeting place for Fyn painters at the beginning of the 20th century. Harald Giersing joined the group and married Besse Syberg, Fritz Syberg's sister. Other artists came to Møllebakken to seek inspiration, including Olaf Rude, Harald Leth and Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen.

Another artist in the group was Poul S. Christiansen who, like Larsen, came from the north of Funen and became a close friend of Kristian Zahrtmann after he had joined the group in 1885.

Because of their everyday and rural paintings, they were sometimes disparagingly referred to as the bondemalerne , peasant painters. In 1907 a heated debate sparked in the Danish press between Gudmund Hentze, Harald and Agnes Slott-Møller, who represented an intellectual movement in Copenhagen, and Peter Hansen, who created the Funen painters together with Jens Birkholm, Poul S. Christiansen and Karl Schou represented.

Similarities and differences

The three core members of the Funen painters, Larsen, Syber and Hansen, had a lot in common. All studied under Kristian Zahrtmann and were later influenced by Theodor Philipsen , whose approach to light and shadow in images of nature can be found in her pictures. As with Philipsen, Paul Gauguin and Impressionism can also be seen in their art. However, Zahrtmann insisted that everyone develop their own styles. Nevertheless, they copied Zahrtmann's intense colors, for example. Larsen even rejected the idea of being identified with a "Funen School" - rather, relationships should develop through a common background and close friendship.

  • The Faaborg Museum in the port of Faaburg is also very close to the Funen painter, especially Fritz Syberg and Peter Hansen, who grew up in this village. The museum creates special exhibitions of the Fyn painters.
