history
The building was designed by the architect George Cannon Young; The construction costs amounted to 31 million US dollars . It was built from 1962 to 1972. Upon completion, all LDS Church offices moved into this building. Here, among other things, church literature is produced, the holy scriptures translated, the missionary activities of the church administered, church films produced and the construction of temples supervised.
The entrance area is dominated by a huge mural showing the missionary order . There is also a statue in honor of the Mormon pioneers ; it depicts a man and his wife burying their child.
The bottom four floors of the building have wings facing west and east. The north sides of the two wings are without windows; they have stone facades with large reliefs of the two hemispheres of the earth. At the tower in the middle, the south, west and east facades are built in the style of the World Trade Center of New York City .
The viewing platform is open to everyone free of charge. From there you can see Antelope Island State Park and the Great Salt Lake in the northwest, the Wasatch Range in the north and east, the city skyline in the south and the Oquirrh Mountains beyond Temple Square in the west.
Visitors can also visit the gardens around the building. These are redesigned every six months and contain a number of exotic plants.
