The Fürstlich Fürstenberg collections are collections of the Prince von Fürstenberg of natural history and historical objects as well as modern art in a private museum in Donaueschingen . With the Princely Fürstenberg Archives , the Donaueschingen court library was once part of the ensemble.

history

Natural collections

The collections did not emerge from a cabinet of rarities , as is customary in aristocratic circles , but rather in the 19th century from the idea of promoting the education of the population together with the Baarverein , which was also founded at this time , whose members helped to build up essential parts of the collections with the support of the Princely House. The court library, which was created earlier, was part of this educational idea until it was sold.

Karl Egon II zu Fürstenberg had the collection exhibited in Donaueschingen Castle in 1832 and later in Karlshof . Plaster casts of ancient sculptures were popular as illustrative material. In 1868 Karl Egon III. zu Fürstenberg expanded the former tithe building into a museum and opened it to the public. The collections include a department for geology and mineralogy with rocks and minerals from the Black Forest, among others, as well as a collection of fossils, primarily from the former territory of the Fürstenbergers, for example from the fossil site at Höwenegg . Another department includes zoology, the prehistory and early history of the Baar and the history of the Princely House.

Art collections

The basic holdings of the art collection were the objects from the legacy of the lords of Zimmer and von Helfenstein with the master von Meßkirch, as well as some significant acquisitions of works of art in the year the museum was founded. After Heinrich Feurstein , Christian Altgraf zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (1906–1973) took care of the collection from 1954 . Joachim Egon Fürst zu Fürstenberg had the rooms renovated in 1979. The old art department was sold in 2003 and is now the highlight of the Würth Collection , exhibited in the Johanniterkirche in Schwäbisch Hall .

In 2013, the Wildensteiner Altar was purchased by the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart , and the other works of art of national importance from the collection, such as the Falkensteiner Altar or the Gray Passion by Hans Holbein the Elder, have also come there on permanent loan.

The modern art department is particularly encouraged by the Fürstenberg family, and works by the Donaueschingen artist Anselm Kiefer are on display . The museum is open from April to November for an entrance fee.
