Christian Altgraf zu Salm , completely Christian Emil Karl Altgraf zu Salm-Reifferscheidt-Raitz (born April 2, 1906 in Vienna , † April 25, 1973 at Dyck Castle in Bedburdyck ), was a German art historian .

Life

Christian Altgraf zu Salm was the son of Karl Altgraf zu Salm (1871-1927) and his wife Elisabeth, Princess zu Fürstenberg (1878-1939). In 1926 he began studying art history at the University of Vienna , but after the death of his father he broke off to take over the management of his father's estate in Budkau , Trebitsch district , in South Moravia . In 1942 he was drafted into military service and worked as an interpreter in France. In 1945 he became an American prisoner of war . After the end of the war, due to expropriations and expulsions, he could no longer return to Czechoslovakia and from 1946 lived with his cousin Max zu Fürstenberg in Donaueschingen , where he took care of the princely art collection. In 1947 he began studying art history at the University of Freiburg again and was there in 1950 when Kurt Bauch with a thesis for Master of Meßkirch doctorate .

In 1954 he became head of the Princely Fürstenberg Collections in Donaueschingen. In 1958 he went to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen as chief curator , where he was involved in the restructuring of the department for old German painting at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and in the refurbishment of the branch galleries in Aschaffenburg, Burghausen and Augsburg, whose catalogs he edited with staff. In 1966 he became director of the museums at the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes in Munich. In 1968 he retired.

His specialty was old German painting from the 14th to 16th centuries.
