The class 4000 is a meter-gauge electric locomotive from Ferrocarriles de Vía Estrecha (FEVE) in Spain for 1,500 volts DC. They were used on the Bilbao - Donostia railway line , where they were in service until the 1980s . Of the ten locomotives built in 1928, five have been preserved.

The locomotives for freight transport were procured by the Compañía de Ferrocarriles Vascongados as part of the electrification of the 115-kilometer main line in 1928. The general contractor for the order was Brown, Boveri & Cie. (BBC), which also supplied the electrical part; the mechanical part came from the Belgian foundry Forges Usines et Fonderies Haine-Saint-Pierre (FUF) in La Louvière .

The vehicles were numbered 1 to 10 at the Compañía de Ferrocarriles Vascongados. They were initially painted in two colors, red and cream. During the Spanish Civil War in 1936 this gave way to a more camouflaged dark green-brown paint.

With the takeover of the railway company by the state-owned FEVE in 1972, the locomotives became the 4000 series with the numbers 4001 to 4010. They were first given a blue paint with silver decorative lines, then a light and dark blue paint with a yellow and white dividing line. The three locomotives 4002, 4006 and 4010 received a two-tone Pullman Astrich in dark blue and cream for the tourist trains.

In connection with the 1992 takeover of the two meter-gauge Mallet steam locomotives E 164 and E 206 from Portugal by La Traction in the Swiss Jura, a class 4000 locomotive, number 4004, was also imported from Spain into Switzerland and at La Traction as the Ge 4 / 4 4004. During this time, German-Swiss hobby railroaders called these locomotives with the nickname crocodile locomotives , Spanish-speaking Cocodrilo, probably because of their visual similarities with the German crocodile locomotives of the E 93 and E 94 (KLE 2) series as well as those of Hobby model railroaders and amateur railroaders as BVZ crocodile designated BVZ HGe 4/4 11-15 of the former Bvz Zermatt-Bahn (BVZ). Since the reconditioning of locomotive 4004 at La Traction failed, the dismantled locomotive was disposed of in 2015, this designation has been forgotten again. There is no consistent evidence that this locomotive was called a crocodile locomotive, except by the German-Swiss amateur railroaders of the time. This term crocodile locomotives is also not found in the references given by Theo Stolz.

The locomotive has a running gear that consists of two two-axle bogies with a pawl bearing drive that are connected to one another with a close coupling . The axle bearings are designed as isothermal bearings.

The superstructures do not transmit any tensile force and only serve to protect the electrical equipment. They consist of a central part in the form of a shorter locomotive body with the two driver's cabs and the two pantographs and two stems. The stems on which the third headlight is arranged use the entire width of the vehicle.

In the middle part , the equipment room with a central aisle is located between the two driver's cabs . On one side there is the high-voltage cell, the cam switch mechanism , the vacuum pump for the train brake and the compressor for the pantograph and the whistle. On the other side there is the low-voltage frame, the quick switch, the converter for the control power supply , the batteries and the drive motor fan. The cam switch mechanism is mechanically driven by the handwheels of the travel switches in the driver's cabs via a chain gear. A hand air pump enables the pantograph to be lifted without compressed air.

The starting resistors are located in the stems . The two CMTD type traction motors of a bogie form a group that is permanently connected in series. When approaching, both groups are connected in series on the first nine speed levels; on the next five speed levels they are connected in parallel, followed by two field weakness levels . The locomotives do not have an electric brake. The traction motors were cooled by a fan with two fan wheels in the engine room, which sucked in the cooling air in the lower area of ​​the side wall and conducted it to the traction motors in the bogies via floor ducts.

Numbers and names

The names of the locomotives come from mountain peaks along the Bilbao – Donostia railway line.
