The first round of the women’s FIH Hockey World League / 2016–2017 took place between April 9 and October 9, 2016 in a total of seven tournaments.

Point rule

In contrast to most hockey competitions, a shoot-out was then played in the first two rounds in the group stage in the event of a tie and the winner received two points. The loser remained with one point.

Singapore

The tournament took place in Singapore from April 9th ​​to 17th, 2016 . At the same time, a men's tournament of the Hockey World League was held. The game was played at the Sengkang Sports Center . Participants were nations from (Southeast) Asia. The top three, Thailand , Kazakhstan, and Singapore qualified for the second round. The tournament was played in a group stage with everyone-against-everyone.

Suva

The tournament for the oceanic nations took place from June 27th to July 1st, 2016 in Suva , Fiji at the National Hockey Center . At the same time a men's tournament of the Hockey World League was held. The tournament was not played in the large field format (with 11 players per team), but in the so-called Hockey5 format, with only five players per team, on a smaller field and with slightly modified rules. A group stage was played in which each team met the other teams twice. The winner of this tournament qualified for the second round. The infrastructure at the venue was damaged by a strong cyclone, but the tournament was held with the support of the Fiji government. The storm also affected the participating countries and led to Samoa being canceled.

Prague

The tournament in Prague , Czech Republic was held from August 30th to September 4th, 2016 at the SK Slavia Prague facility . At the same time a men's tournament of the Hockey World League took place. The tournament was played in a basic round with everyone against everyone. The three best qualified for the second round.

The tournament in Accra , Ghana was held from September 9-11, 2016. After Namibia canceled a three-nation tournament in everyone-gen-everyone mode. At the same time a men's tournament of the Hockey World League was played. The best qualified for the second round.
