FIH Hockey World League / 2016-2017
The third edition of the FIH Hockey World League started on April 9, 2016 in Singapore and ended on December 10, 2017 in Bhubaneswar ( India ). This edition serves as qualification for the 2018 Women's Field Hockey World Championship in London as well as for the 2018 Men's Field Hockey World Championship in India.
format
- Round 1 is not limited in the number of participants and tournaments. The mode depends on how many nations participate in an individual tournament.
- Round 2 consists of three tournaments of eight nations each. Both the hosts and the nations placed 11th to 20th in the world rankings are already qualified. A tournament consists of a group phase with two groups of four and a placement phase with quarter finals.
- Semi-finals are two tournaments with ten participants each. Depending on the continental champions, the first five to eight of a tournament will qualify for the 2018 World Hockey Championship . The host and the nations ranked 1-11 in the world rankings have already qualified in advance. The mode of a tournament consists of a group phase with two groups of five and a placement phase with quarter finals.
- The final tournament takes place with eight participants. The mode consists of a group phase with groups of four and a placement phase with quarter-finals.
Special points rule
There is no tie in rounds 1 and 2. If both teams have scored the same number of goals after regular playing time, a "Shoot Out" will be played. The winner then receives two points and the loser one point. There are still three points for a win after regular time.
Ladies
The women's competition was played in a total of 13 individual tournaments in 13 different countries.
Round 1
The first round of the Hockey World League was played in a total of seven tournaments. The organizers were announced by the FIH on October 9, 2015. At six of these tournaments a men's tournament was also held at the same time. From a total of 32 participating nations, 16 qualified for the second round.

round 2
On September 9, 2015, the FIH announced the organizers of the second round. A total of three tournaments will be held between January 14th and April 2nd. The participants are made up of the organizers, the five nations that were able to qualify via the world rankings and 16 qualifiers from the first round. The first two of the tournaments qualify directly. In addition, the two best in the world rankings from the third place advance one lap.

Semifinals
The organizing associations of the semifinals were announced on November 8, 2013. For the women, Belgium and Argentina were originally chosen as the host countries. However, Argentina returned the alignment for reasons not known. Announced on October 4th, 2016 that this tournament will take place in Johannesburg , South Africa . The semifinals also function as qualifying tournaments for the 2018 World Cup in London , United Kingdom . Participants in the semifinals were, in addition to the hosts, the nations qualified via the world rankings and the eight qualifiers from the second round.

Auckland , New Zealand was nominated by the world governing body on March 15, 2014 as the venue for the final round of the World League. The first four of both semifinals were eligible.

On September 9, 2015, the FIH announced the organizers of the second round. In the period from January 14th to April 2nd, a total of three tournaments were held. The participants consisted of the organizers, the seven nations that qualified via the world rankings, and 14 qualifiers from the first round. The first two of the tournaments qualified directly. In addition, the two best in the world rankings from the third place went one round.

Semifinals
The organizing associations of the semifinals were announced on November 8, 2013. For the men, London and Argentina were chosen as the host countries and locations. As with the women, the Argentine federation gave the event back. On October 4th, 2016, the international association announced that the semifinals would take place in Johannesburg , South Africa . The semifinals also acted as qualifying tournaments for the 2018 World Cup in Bhubaneswar , India . Participants in the semifinals were, in addition to the hosts, the nations qualified via the world rankings, and the nine qualifiers from the second round.

Simultaneously with the announcement of the semi-finals in 2013, the host association for the final tournament was also determined. India will host the final for the third time. The venue is Bhubaneswar . The first three of the semifinals and the fourth better positioned in the world rankings are qualified.
