FIS races

FIS races are ski competitions organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS) that do not belong to any racing series.

In contrast to the racing series (e.g. World Cup , European Cup , Nor-Am Cup or Continental Cup ), no cup points are awarded and added up. There are also no overall winners. Results in FIS races are mainly reflected in so-called FIS points , which are calculated using a complicated key.

A certain point value is a prerequisite for every skier in order to be allowed to participate in the European Cup, World Cup or World Championships. For this reason, mainly young athletes who are at the beginning of their careers start in FIS races. But world-class athletes also take part time and again, for example to bridge breaks in the World Cup calendar. As a result, there are sometimes very strong FIS races.

The start authorization for the racing series in Alpine skiing is discipline-related; therefore, for example, a slalom and giant slalom specialist must compete in FIS races to qualify in downhill skiing even if he is the overall World Cup winner.

The FIS grass ski races are a special case. They also count towards the overall World Cup via a point system and are sometimes as strong as World Cup races.

There are FIS races in the following ski disciplines:

In the past, FIS competitions were held in ski jumping , which were replaced by the FIS Cup in 2005 .

In the early years of the FIS, the competitions of the Nordic and Alpine World Ski Championships were often referred to as FIS races before they were held as the official World Championships for the first time in 1937. Likewise, before the introduction of the World Cup, other competitions organized by the FIS were also referred to as FIS races .
