1959 received the Società delle Ferrovie Regionali Ticinesi ( FRT , former name of the FART ) together with the Società di imprese Subalpina Ferroviarie (SSIF) four electric articulated railcar type Abe 8/8 . Initially, railcars 21 and 22 belonged to the FRT / FART and railcars 23 and 24 to the SSIF. In 1982 FART sold its two railcars to the SSIF. Although the SSIF is a purely Italian company, it uses the Swiss type designations .

The four railcars were purchased for the international express trains between Locarno and Domodossola . They replaced the ABDe 4/4 . In 1959, the new railcars made it possible to shorten the travel time between Domodossola and Locarno to one hour and 40 minutes, an improvement of 20 minutes. In 1992, they were largely replaced by ABe 4/6 in the management of express trains .

The articulated multiple units were manufactured by Schindler Waggon in Pratteln, the electrical equipment was supplied by the BBC subsidiary Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri (TIBB). The car body is divided into three parts and is supported under the box joint on a Jakobs bogie .

Railcar 22 was involved in two serious accidents. On August 13, 1967 it collided with the ABDe 4/4 18 and in October 1980 with the ABDe 4/4 12. The number 12 was therefore discarded.

The ABe 8/8 24 was put into operation in 2007 as a panorama multiple unit with a new box body. It serves as a reserve for the new SSIF panorama multiple units .
