The class FS 741 was a steam locomotive delivered to Ferrovie dello Stato , which was created by converting the FS 740 into a Franco-Crosti locomotive . The steam locomotives were rebuilt in the Officina Grandi Riparazioni Verona repair shop and used in service in northern Italy and Sicily . Two locomotives have been preserved; 741 120 is a running museum locomotive and 741 137 is in the Pietrarsa Railway Museum .

history

The FS 740 was the numerically dominating freight locomotive of the FS . In the 1930s, considerations were made to improve this series in terms of reducing coal consumption and increasing performance. This led to the conversion of 94 locomotives into the FS 743 "series , which began in 1937 and ended around 1950. The new series was converted as a Franco-Crosti locomotive and had two preheaters on both sides of the boiler.

In the 1950s, the locomotives received a preheater, which was located under the boiler. The first locomotive was the 743.433, which also proved itself. The performance could be increased by 12% compared to the FS 740 . The fuel consumption could also be reduced again.

Then another 80 locomotives were converted according to this model and designated as the FS 741 series. The converted locomotives kept their former serial number. The new locomotives now had an asymmetrical appearance due to only one exhaust chimney on the right-hand side of the boiler in front of the driver's cab.

commitment

Pustertalbahn

In 1958 the first locomotive of the series came to the Franzensfeste depot . In the course of time, up to eight locomotives were stationed here, a total of twelve machines were at home until 1975. The locomotives did a good job on the mountain route to Innichen .

After the opening of the winter sports facilities on the Plan de Corones , there was an Alpine-See-Express winter sports train that ran to Toblach . At times this train was hauled by up to 16 four-axle express train wagons of three 741s, two at the Zugspitze and one at the end of the train. Especially in the uphill section from Bruneck to Olang , the locomotives were loaded to the limit.

Other depots

The locomotives were also used in Piedmont and Sicily , especially in Palermo , Caltanissetta and Catania . At the beginning of the 1980s, the scrapping of the locomotives began, which has brought it to 25 years of service. Two locomotives of the series have been preserved, the 741.137 inoperable in the Railway Museum in Pietrarsa, the 741.120 operable in Pistoia . Both locomotives are the only surviving Franco-Crosti locomotives in the world.

technology

The locomotives were radically changed compared to the original design . The missing chimney and the preheater on the right side of the boiler were completely new. The preheater boiler is accessed below the smoke chamber door.

The preheater uses the locomotive's flue gases to preheat the boiler feed water before it enters the boiler. This minimized fuel consumption and increased efficiency. With the FS 741 , only one preheater was used and placed under the main boiler. As a result, roughly the same weight as the FS 740 was achieved, when the boiler including the driver's cab was raised. At the same time, the sand dome was shortened a bit. As a result of this conversion measure, the locomotive could also be used on lines with a lower superstructure.

They have a Heusinger control . The locomotives were equipped with Westinghouse brakes and steam heating .
