At the San Candido train station ( Italian: Stazione di San Candido ) the Pustertalbahn and the Drautalbahn meet in the east of South Tyrol . It is the border station between South and East Tyrol and Italy and Austria .

location

The train station is located at an altitude of 1176  m east of the Toblacher Sattel in Alta Pusteria . It is located on the western outskirts of Innichen directly on the SS 49 . The distance to the state border with Austria in the east is about 7 km.

history

The station was put into operation in 1871 together with the Pustertalbahn and Drautalbahn lines, which were driven by the Southern Railway Company . Building additions by Ferrovie dello Stato , which include a residential building by Angiolo Mazzoni , date from the 1920s, 1960s and 1980s . Between 1985 and 1989, Ferrovie dello Stato provided the electrification of the Pustertal Railway from Innichen westwards to Franzensfeste station with direct current (3 kV), while the Austrian Federal Railways electrified the Drautalbahn eastwards from Innichen to Lienz station with single-phase alternating current (15 kV 16.7 Hz).

Since the train station is a bit away from the village center, the project of relocation to the east is closer to the center of the village. A corresponding master plan was commissioned by the South Tyrolean transport structures and presented in 2013.

Buildings

The reception building designed by Wilhelm von Flattich has a central structure in Nagelfluh and has granite bosses . The two-story main wing is complemented by two single-story extensions. The gables are made of wood. There is a spacious warehouse on the east side and a hexagonal water station on the west side.

The buildings mentioned have been listed as historical monuments since 2004.

function

In terms of operations, the San Candido train station was originally designed as an intermediate station . However, due to the electrification of the Drava and Pustertal Railway with different traction current systems in the 1980s, it actually became a double terminus . The system separation point between the Italian and Austrian network has for years only by specially acquired Corridor trains the series ÖBB 1822 without change of locomotives are passed. It was not until the state of South Tyrol purchased multi-system multiple units of the Stadler Flirt series in 2013 that continuous regional rail operations between South and East Tyrol were possible again .

Innichen train station is served by regional trains from Trenitalia and SAD , which also operate bus connections to the train station.
