FT Island ( kor. 에프티 아일랜드 ) (also: Five Treasure Island or FTI) is a South Korean band consisting of five members. The name F . T . I sland represents F ive T reasure I sland by each of the five members is a treasure. Their first album, Cheerful Sensibility, was the sixth best-selling album in South Korea in 2007 (just months after their debut). Her debut song Lovesick topped the K-pop charts for eight straight weeks. Their first album in Japan was also the sixth best-selling album on the Oricon charts.

history

2007–2008: Cheerful Sensibility and overseas promotion

Although FT Island's first album was scheduled to be released in May 2007, the members appeared on Mnet's "Dugeun Dugeun Yeochinmandeulgi" (두근 두근 여친 만들기) show on Korean television station Mnet instead, to attract more media attention. The program title was officially translated by Mnet as Wanna Be My Girlfriend? although 두근 두근 refers to the sound of a heartbeat. The band also performed live on the Rolling Hall stage and held their first official concert at Live House Melon-AX, Gwangjang-dong in Seoul on May 27, 2007. On June 7, 2007 the group played their debut song Love Sick on the Music TV program M! Countdown. The song stayed at the top of the Korean charts for 8 consecutive weeks. FT Island received their first number 1 M! Countdown , beating even other top performers like Dynamic Duo and Fly to the Sky just two weeks after their debut. They received several awards for this album.

Their first album, Cheerful Sensibility , consisting of 13 songs, was divided into two parts: the "Emotional Chapter" and the "FT Island Chapter", according to the genre of the songs. The “emotional chapter” consisted of rock ballads produced by composers who have worked on several songs for other famous Korean singers, such as: B. SG Wannabe . The “FT Island Chapter” contained upbeat songs from the pop and rock genre and was written by Japanese composers who worked with the Japanese band SMAP . worked, produced. The album sold 79,786 times in 2007, making it the sixth best-selling album of the year. The album was re-released on December 3, 2007 under the name The Refreshment . In addition to the three extra songs, various extras were included: a photo book, photo cards and a mix program called Music 2.0 , which allowed you to tune the pitch of the instruments according to the vocals (voices). In December 2007 this edition was sold 25,724 times.

A special version of their debut album was released in mid-February. On April 12th, 2008 they gave their first concert in Thailand at the Royal Paragon Hall. In addition to the songs on their album, each member of the band had their own solo.

After rising popularity across Asia, FT Island's Japanese debut album Prologue of FT Island was released on June 7, 2008, which earned them the hit song Soyogi . The album consists of 8 songs, 2 of which are newer versions of their original titles FT Island and Primadonna . The final track, Always Be Mine , is an English version of First Kiss , even if the lyrics are different from the Korean version. Music videos for Soyogi and Friendship have also been released. After their activities in Japan, FT Island returned to Korea to release their second Korean album Colorful Sensibility on August 27, 2008 . A subsequent EP, Colorful Sensibility Part 2 , was released on October 17, 2008.

Later that year, on December 17th, FT Island released The One , their first Japanese commercial single, which went to number 9 on the Oricon Daily Charts. F&C Music stated that while all other Korean bands needed the help of major Japanese record labels to gain popularity, FT Island made it to the charts without having had much marketing success. Furthermore, the single became significant in that it was the last officially released CD with ex-member Oh Won-bin.

2009 – today: New line-up, subgroup and Cross & Change

Rumors were circulating that band member Oh Won-bin was leaving the group and on January 28, 2009 those rumors were confirmed. Oh Won-bin will leave the group and should be replaced by a new member. One day later it was announced that F&C trainee Song Seung-hyun would be supporting FT Island as guitarist and accompanist. With this new group composition, FT Island released a music video called Bad Woman for their mini-album. FTI advertised this with SBS Inkigayo , and two days later they released the mini-album Jump Up .

When the doctoral work in Korea was finished, FT Island returned to Japan, where they immediately released their second Japanese single. This was the first time that the members themselves contributed to their music, wrote lyrics and helped with the production. While member Lee Jae-jin co-wrote the song Moonlight Angel , group leader Choi Jong-hoon helped as co-producer. I believe myself became the first single with the voice of member Song Seung-hyun. To promote their music, the group made several appearances in Japan during the summer of 2009.

Her Asian tour ran through Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and other countries and lasted several weeks. The tour started in Singapore. For an hour, the five band members played their hit songs from their latest album, including Bad Woman , in front of around 900 fans from different countries.

In July F&C Music released a cover image for the upcoming third album by the group Cross & Change . In connection with the information on the cover, FT Island decided to try out some new music styles on their third album, which included ballads and some pop songs. The group even underwent an image change and adopted a retro style, the so-called “Bokgo”, which was inspired by the “jeans jeans look” period during the 80s. To promote their third album, this time they released an online music video teaser (excerpt) with children watching their idols (played by the band members themselves) on television. The lead single I Hope was released on July 16. After the activities in South Korea ended, FT Island flew back to Japan and released their third Japanese single Raining there on October 21, 2009. Choi Jong-hun even played piano in the title song instead of the usual guitar.

After several Japanese promotional activities, band members Choi Jong-hun, Choi Min-hwan and Lee Jae-jin were cast into a subgroup called FT Triple. The reason for this was that the subgroup took up a bit of the singing time at a concert so that lead singer Lee Hong-ki doesn't have to strain his voice. In December 2008, lead vocalist Lee Hong-ki had problems with his neck due to exhaustion, which resulted in disappointing performances. Another reason was Hong-ki 's busy schedule for filming his drama You're Beautiful and Song Seung-hyun's busy schedule. However, instead of Jae-jin taking over vocals and bass and Jong-hun on guitar, Jae-jin took over vocals and bass with Jong-hun playing piano. Min-hwan continued to play the drums. Although the trio was unofficially announced as "A3" at the Dream Concert in Japan (the "A" represented the blood type of all three band members), they wanted to keep the FT name and ended up adding "Triple", which the trio represented. FT Triple's first single Love Letter was released along with FT Island's 2CD repackaged album Double Date , as part of the second CD Two Date , which contained all of the FT Triple songs. On November 14th, 2009 FT Island started their national tour in Seoul called Men's Stories . They gave many concerts, with a focus on Southeast Asia such as Singapore , Bangkok , Hong Kong , Taiwan , Shanghai and on March 6, 2010 in Manila Philippines in the PICC Center.

After FT Island had their 1000 day FT Island celebration , which happened to be the same day as Lee Hong-ki's birthday, they flew to Japan and stayed there until the end of August to make their big debut there in collaboration with Japanese record company Warner Music Japan and its official record label F&C Music to prepare. Because of its rapidly growing popularity, Warner Music offered the group a major promotion in the Japanese market. FT Island will release their latest single Flower Rock on May 19, 2010 under Warner Music. To get a bigger promotion, Warner Music got the group to spend 5 more months on promotional activities such as B. Fan meetings, magazines, interviews, short concerts etc. to stay.

After promoting their single, FT Island want to focus on their comeback album in Korea, which will be released in September 2010. Their sixth album is believed to be a "bombshell" as it will be a collaboration between F&C and Warner Music. They also have a new Japanese show that has been on air since April 7th.

On March 14, 2019, FNC Entertainment announced that Leader Choi Jung-hun is withdrawing from the entertainment business and leaving the group. It became known that he and various other celebrities were involved in a prostitution scandal.

On March 11th, 2009 it was announced that Lee Jae-jin would be performing in the musical Sonagi . He'll get a role as a little boy. He was selected for the cast because he had "a great passion for the play, the image of a sincere boy and the qualifications to be considered as a musical actor". In doing so, he followed in the footsteps of Big Bangs Seungri, who also took part in a musical in summer 2008. His first appearance in Sonagi was on the May 1st show, accompanied by the press that previously caused a sensation. All but Hong-ki, who had a busy schedule that day, all the members of the band had made it to the musical.

On June 29th, Choi Jong-hun starred with Core Contents Media's soloist Hong Jin-young as one of the main characters in their music video Love Battery .

In July 2009 FT Island released their new album under the title Cross & Changes . The main song Barae (I hope) was sold 400,000 times within a week. In September 2009, Lee Hong-ki was selected to star in the popular drama You're Beautiful .

FT Island held their Asian Concert tour until the end of March 2010. They are currently preparing for a major debut in Japan. Her single Flower Rock was supposed to be released on May 19, 2010, but the official MV was released on April 29, 2010.
