The beer factory in Timișoara ( Romanian Fabrica de bere ) is the oldest brewery in Romania . The listed building is located on Strada Ștefan cel Mare No. 28 in the 2nd district Fabric ( German  factory town ) of the city of Timișoara ( German  Timisoara ).

history

After the Ottomans were expelled in 1716, the military administration of the fortress under Eugene of Savoy ordered the installation of kettles in 1718 to provide drinking water for the residents of what was then Timisoara. Along with this, kettles were also set up for brewing beer and distilling spirits .

In 1727 the brewery was the first company in the Banat to be privatized and leased to Philip Bauer . With the elevation of Timișoara to a royal free city in 1779, the administration of the Timişoara beer factory was transferred from the imperial administration to the city administration. The recession that followed the crash of 1873 had an impact on all of Austria-Hungary and was therefore also felt in Timisoara. In the course of this, the brewery was auctioned. In 1874 the brewery was temporarily taken over by the Erste Sparkasse ( Romanian Prima Casa de Economii ) and bought in 1882 by the brewer Ignaz Deutsch from Vienna . As Fabrikshof Bierbrauerei Aktiengesellschaft it was run by Ignaz Deutsch și fiul SA until 1929. At times it was also called Temesvári Polgári Sörfözde Részvénytársaság , the German equivalent for this was Temesvárer Bürgerliche Bierbrauerei Actiengesellschaft . Under Ferdinand I , the brewery became purveyor to the court of the Romanian royal family in 1920 . Between 1929 and 1948 it was finally owned by Csel și fii .

The company was nationalized from 1948 to 1995 under communist rule . In the 1960s, the brewery was modernized into the second fully automated production facility in the world. Timișoreana is now managed as a beer brand within the Ursus Group , which in turn has been part of the Japanese brewery group Asahi since 2017 . Between 2007 and 2009 around 50 million euros were invested in new production and filling systems, which doubled the production capacity to more than two million hectoliters. Most of the buildings have been renovated keeping the style of the 18th century.

A special feature was the earlier connection to the goods traffic of the tram , from 1916 to 1975 the brewery received its goods wagons via the tram network.
