Independent student council lists of Austria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Independent Student Union Lists of Austria (FLÖ) are an amalgamation of party-independent student groups at several Austrian universities , which are running together for the federal representation of the Austrian student union .

history

In the 70s, which was Students' shaft at the Vienna University of Technology (HTU Vienna) of the People's Party-affiliated Austrian Students Union (ÖSU) ruled that in Austria the previous fraction of today's action group is (AG). From this unsatisfactory situation for many (non-party) representatives of the field of study, the idea for a separate list was born, the student council list.

The absolute majority of the ÖSU at the Vienna University of Technology was already broken when it first started, and two years later the ÖSU at the Vienna University of Technology died out. After the elections in 1983, the student councils appointed the chairman of the main committee at the HTU Vienna for the first time. After a further four years (1987), the student council list appointed the chairperson of all five faculties and the main committee.

But the idea of student council lists was not limited to the HTU Vienna. Immediately after the first beginnings in Vienna, a student council list was created at the Graz University of Technology in 1983. Today there are student council lists at the following universities: TU Vienna , TU Graz , Johannes Kepler University Linz , University of Graz , University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna , University of Klagenfurt and University of Vienna . But the six art universities have also taken up this idea and created fractions similar to the student council list idea (e.g. art and politics, Adapo, UnARTige Liste).

For several years now, the student council lists have appointed the chairpersons of the local student unions at the Vienna University of Technology and at the Graz University of Technology; they also held or are chairpersons at the University of Linz, the University of Graz, the University of Klagenfurt and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, as well as at several art universities.

In 2005 the position of the FLÖ was decisively strengthened nationwide through a new electoral mode that was decided under the ÖVP-FPÖ government. However, it was only just able to maintain its lead at individual universities, for example its stronghold TU Vienna.

In 2007 the FLÖ emerged stronger from the ÖH elections and were able to increase from 11 to 14 mandates in the federal representation and to extend the lead in the strongholds. In a coalition with the Green & Alternative Students (GRAS) and the Association of Socialist Students in Austria (VSStÖ) , the FLÖ appointed Hartwig Brandl as the chairman of the ÖH for the first time in its history.

The coalition of the GRAS, VSStÖ and FLÖ collapsed after the FLÖ accused the VSStÖ of acting too much after the parent party SPÖ. This accusation was rejected by the VSStÖ, they in turn accused the FLÖ of power intoxication . The previous ÖH chairman, Hartwig Brandl (FLÖ), was then voted out of office by GRAS, VSStÖ and AG.

In 2009 the FLÖ were able to gain further strength in the ÖH elections and for the first time became the second strongest member of the ÖH federal representation with 16 seats. Nevertheless, the FLÖ were not part of the BV executive from 2009 to 2011, which was formed from a coalition of GRAS, FEST and VSStÖ without an absolute mandate majority.

In 2011, the FLÖ, with Martin Schott as the top candidate, defended second place in the ÖH elections. Since July 2011, the FLÖ have again been part of the ÖH executive coalition (together with GRAS, VSStÖ and FEST) and from July 2012 also appointed Martin Schott as the chairman of the ÖH federal representation for one year.

In the subsequent ÖH elections in 2013, it was possible to keep second place and even reduce the gap to the action group by gaining two mandates. With the Independent Student Council List MedUni Vienna (UFMUW) and the Independent Student Council List Innsbruck (UNIKORN) there were two new groups that joined the FLÖ. The UFMUW achieved a landslide victory among the student body at the Medical University of Vienna and immediately achieved 5 out of 9 mandates. At the federal level, the coalition with GRAS, VSStÖ and FEST was continued and Florian Kraushofer (FLÖ) was elected chairman.

Party independence

The unifying feature of the various university groups on the student council lists is their independence from political parties and their common principles. After the election of Hartwig Brandl as ÖH chairman and the coalition of the FLÖ with GRAS and VSStÖ in the context of the ÖH elections in 2007, members of the ÖVP-related action community and the Liberal Student Forum (LSF) accused the student council lists of having this independence given up.
