Rivera was a political municipality in the Taverne district in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland until November 20, 2010 .

Rivera is located roughly in the middle between the canton capital Bellinzona and the regional economic center Lugano . The municipality is located at the southern foot of the historic Monte Ceneri and east of the larger Monte Tamaro, which is known for its leisure activities . The Gotthard autobahn A2 cuts through the town in two parts, but with the nearby Rivera connection it offers direct access to the important north-south axis.

history

The name Rivera and that of its three hamlets Sorencino (first mentioned in 1296), Soresina and Capidogno appear for the first time around 1300. First belonging to Como , Rivera was given to the Visconti of Milan in 1335 . After that it belonged to the bailiwicks of the Swiss Confederation until 1798 . In 1803, with the act of mediation, Switzerland largely regained its autonomy and Rivera became a municipality in the independent canton of Ticino.

On December 23, 1946, graves from the Iron Age and remains from the Roman era were found in the Monte Ceneri district

Community merger

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the seven municipalities in the Vedeggio Valley was approved by the voters of five municipalities: Bironico , Camignolo , Medeglia , Rivera and Sigirino should therefore have merged to form the municipality of Monteceneri . Isone and Mezzovico-Vira rejected the merger. As a result, the State Council refrained from asking the Grand Council a compulsory merger of the two negative municipalities. Monteceneri was therefore only formed from the five consenting municipalities.
