Rodolfo Enrique Facundo Cabral (born May 22, 1937 in La Plata , Buenos Aires Province , Argentina , † July 9, 2011 in Guatemala City , Guatemala ) was an Argentine songwriter , songwriter and writer . He was considered the most important folk singer in Latin America and was one of the most famous personalities on the continent. He fell victim to an attack.

Life

Facundo Cabral was born in 1937 as the eighth child of his parents in La Plata in the poorest of circumstances. The family moved when he was a child, according to Tierra del Fuego ( Tierra del Fuego ). Even as a child he often ran away from home. This brought him to Buenos Aires at the age of nine, where he managed to speak to the First Lady Evita Peron and ask her to do a job for his mother. The story is guaranteed. As a youth he was rebellious and served a prison sentence; in prison he learned to read and write from a Jesuit priest. In 1959 he went to Mar del Plata , where he began his career as a bar singer in several hotels for tourists. His artist name at the time was " El Indio Gasparino ".

In 1976 the singer left his home country after a fascist military coup had taken place in Argentina. He lived in Mexico for a long time until the end of the military dictatorship in 1984 . In 1978 he lost his wife and 14-year-old daughter in a plane crash. He called himself an anarchist . He had no permanent address and lived in hotels, tour buses and with friends. In 1996 the United Nations awarded him the title of " World Ambassador for Peace ".

Career

Cabral was the most important folk singer in Latin America in the 20th century. Many of the texts were influenced by his two favorite authors, Jorge Luis Borges , with whom he had a long friendship, and Walt Whitman , but also by Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa . In total, he has released around 24 albums and written 22 books; he was also considered one of the leading intellectuals in his country. In 1970 he achieved the absolute breakthrough in Latin America with the song " No soy de Aqui, no soy de alla " ( I am not from here, I am not from there ) and he became world-famous through the song. The song was recorded over 700 times and sung by Julio Iglesias and Neil Diamond . In total, it has been translated into more than 27 languages. Cabral has performed as a singer in 159 countries.

Cabral was traveling as a musician in Guatemala and had given two concerts in Quetzaltenango , around 200 kilometers from Guatemala City. On July 9, 2011 at around 5:20 a.m. local time, the car with the manager and the concert promoter was intercepted by three other vehicles on the way to the airport and fire opened. Eight bullets hit Cabral; he died immediately. His manager and the concert promoter were seriously injured. The authorities now assume that the attack was aimed at the promoter and owner of the car, Henry Fariña, who had organized a series of concerts with Cabral. In March 2012 the suspected mastermind of the attack in Colombia was arrested: the 38-year-old Costa Rican Alejandro Jiménez, alias "El Palidejo", who had already been wanted for money laundering in the drug trade.

Cabral's death caused profound consternation across Latin America. Guatemala's President Álvaro Colom Caballeros held a press conference and ordered three days of national mourning . The presidents of Venezuela , Ecuador and Colombia , Hugo Chávez , Rafael Correa and Juan Manuel Santos , also gave their condolences. Ricky Martin and the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Rigoberta Menchu ​​also belonged to the circle of condolents .
