Fairmount is a small town in Grant County , Indiana , about 90 km northeast of Indianapolis . The place has about 3,000 inhabitants and extends over an area of around 3.8 km².
Quakers from North Carolina in particular settled in Fairmount in the 1830s . The place is named after Fairmount Park in Philadelphia , which was officially recognized in 1870.
Fairmount gained fame through the US actor James Dean , who spent part of his childhood there and was buried in Park Cemetery. The comic artist Jim Davis also grew up in Fairmount, and the comic figure Garfield comes from his pen .
