Fakfak ( Indonesian Kota Fakfak , also Fak-Fak) is the capital of the administrative district of Fakfak in the Indonesian province of Papua Barat (formerly Irian Jaya Barat ). The city is located on the Tamaruni Bay ( Seram Sea ) in the northwest of the Bomberai Peninsula . Opposite it is the island of Panjang .

history

Fakfak was also the capital of the Fak-Fak department and the main town of the Fak-Fak subdivision of Dutch New Guinea . Dutch settlement began in 1898 after the Sultanate of Ternate gave permission to do so. Ternate and Fakfak had trade relations before. On April 1, 1942, Japanese troops landed in Fakfak during the Pacific War and the small Dutch garrison surrendered without fighting.
