The Bomberai Peninsula is a peninsula on the western end of the island of New Guinea .

geography

Together with the Vogelkop Peninsula and offshore islands to the north, the Bomberai Peninsula forms the Indonesian province of Papua Barat ( West Papua in German  ). The west of the peninsula is occupied by the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Fakfak , the north belongs to Teluk Bintuni and the southeast to Kaimana .

To the north are Berau Bay and Bintuni Bay ( Bentuni Bay ), which separate the Bomberai Peninsula from the Vogelkop Peninsula. The islands of Amutu Besar , Asap , Arguni and Ogar are located off the north coast . In the northwest on the south coast of the Fakfak peninsula is the place Fakfak , the most important port of the peninsula. Opposite it is the island of Panjang in the Tamaruni Bay .

Further south are the island of Samai and the Sebakorbucht , which is protected by the offshore island of Karas towards Tamaruni Bay . To the southeast lies the island of Adi, across the Nautilus Strait ( Indonesian Selat Nautilus ) . To the east, the Kamraub Bay separates the peninsula from the rest of New Guinea. At its northernmost point in the bay is the island of Freterenusu . Only narrow land bridges connect the Bomberai Peninsula with the neighboring land masses.

Residents

Different languages are traditionally spoken on the peninsula. The Central Malayo-Polynesian languages include four languages in the north and one in the south with a total of 2,600 speakers.

Mor (in the northwest) and three other languages of the peninsula are assigned to the Trans New Guinea languages of the Papuan languages . You speak to more than 7,000 people. There are theories that the East Timorese Papuan language, Fataluku, and other Timor-Alor-Pantar languages originally came from the Bomberai Peninsula.

fauna

The fauna of the Fakfak Mountains includes the black-eared bower bird and Oninia senglaubi , a member of the narrow-mouthed frog family.

On the Vogelkop and Bomberai peninsula and the offshore islands together 24 endemic species of rainbow fish ( Melanotaenia ) live, many of them in the karst areas, including the harlequin rainbow fish .
