Oninia senglaubi is the only species of amphibian species Oninia of the family -mouthed . It is endemic to the Fakfak Mountains of New Guinea .

description

Oninia senglaubi is one of the smallest representatives of New Guinea's herpetofauna and barely reaches two centimeters in length, measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the urostyle . The back color is brown with irregular dark brown spots.

Occurrence

The type locality is 16 km north of the district capital Fakfak in the part of New Guinea belonging to Indonesia . The Fakfak Mountains, a part of the Bomberai Peninsula south of the Vogelkop , are the habitat of the frogs, which occur at altitudes between 600 and 1000 meters.

Systematics and nomenclature

The genus Oninia was first described in 2010 by Rainer Günther , Björn Stelbrink and Thomas von Rintelen . It includes only the species Oninia senglaubi and is therefore monotypical . The genus name Oninia is derived from the Onin region , the northwestern part of the Bomberai Peninsula, where the frog occurs. The species name honors the German biologist Konrad Senglaub , former director of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin .

Together with the genera Asterophrys , Hylophorbus , Mantophryne and Xenorhina , Oninia forms a group of closely related species, the Asterophryini tribe.

According to molecular data (based on homologous DNA sequences of the mitochondria ), Oninia is closely related to the genera Pseudocallulops , Asterophrys and Metamagnusia , but on an osteological basis, Oninia most closely resembles the genus Xenorhina .
