Matthew Hilger (born 1966 or 1967 ) is a former professional American poker player and writer from Atlanta , Georgia . He is also the operator of an internet portal for poker players.

Hilger successfully completed his studies at the University of Georgia and graduated with a Bachelor in Business Administration in 1989. In 1991 he also received a Masters degree from the University of Georgia . In 1996, Hilger obtained a second master's degree in international trade from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

After completing his studies, Hilger worked for the Accenture management consultancy in Central America, and later also in South America.

Today, in addition to his work as a poker player, Hilger works as a journalist and author of specialist literature.

Poker career

Hilger began his career as a professional player in 2001 with online poker . Within a year Hilger managed to break through from the micro limits to the $ 30 / $ 60 limit. In his first year as an online player recorded Hilger a profit of more than 100,000  US dollars . Hilger processed the experiences he had gathered during this year in his first book in 2002. This is still considered to be one of the best books for beginners in the area of limit poker. In 2002 Hilger also began to play larger live tournaments. He achieved his first notable success when he won the New Zealand Poker Championship in Christchurch in 2002. Hilger achieved his best placement at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in 2004 when he finished 33rd in the main event . His last significant placements in a live tournament came in 2007 when he reached two final tables at the Aussie Millions Poker Championship in Melbourne . At the 2009 WSOP , Hilger landed in the prize money for the last time in a live poker tournament.
