action

Young, sensitive Eve is married to Paul, a wealthy businessman. One morning Paul disappeared. Eve has nowhere to find him, eventually turns to the police and reports him missing. Her husband's friend and advisor, the wealthy lawyer Chollet, accompanies her.

Then Eve retreats to her big house and anxiously waits for new messages. She goes through Paul's records and discovers that Paul wasn't as well off financially as she always thought. On the contrary, he left a lot of debts that will have to be paid off in the near future. Is there any connection between Paul's debt and his disappearance? Has he gone underground? Did he leave her alone? What will become of her now?

Eve has a breakdown and is hospitalized. With financial ruin in mind, she continues to worry and even tries to kill herself, but can be calmed down at first. Maitre Chollet visits her and tells her that Paul was involved in questionable deals. There's a very good chance that Paul was murdered. Chollet takes great care of the disturbed Eve, even pays Paul's entire debt, so that Eve no longer has to worry about her future. Chollet accompanies Eve home, cooks for her and proves to be surprisingly pleasant company. Although he is much older than Eve and outwardly rather inconspicuous, the young woman falls in love with Chollet and finally sleeps with him. They will be a couple.

The police become aware of the new development - from their point of view, it looks as if Paul's disappearance could have been a game made up of Eve and Chollet. Eve is picked up for interrogation and is now under pressure again. The inspector makes it clear to her that there are many ways to interpret what is happening, obvious and less obvious. He also claims that Chollet sent her husband's bankruptcy through a third party.

When she is back with Chollet, it turns out that Chollet is not doing well either. He has a heart condition and needs medication, so he asks Eve to drive to a pharmacy and get it. Eve drives off, but is stopped several times. When she returns, Chollet is already dead. Eve leaves the house crying.

She stops at a phone booth and has a conversation: She calls Paul and tells him that she "did it", that he is dead, and adds that she never wants to see him again.
