The Fanntofell is a 901 meter high volcanic mountain in Iceland . Its volume is given by Eason et al. (2015) estimated at 0.7 km³.
Surname
The compound name refers to a tongue of grass surrounded by firn snow (isl. Fönn ) (isl. Tó , actually literally lawn, grass ). Fell means mountain .
location
The mountain is located in the highlands of Iceland and only approx. 3 km west of the Kaldidalur slope .
Fanntofell protrudes from the southwest flank of the Ok shield volcano .
geology
It is a steep and more or less pyramidal mountain v. a. made of palagonite , which belongs to the Ok volcano. However, it has a layer of lava on its summit, so it is not a pure palagonite cone, but a tabular volcano .
Other mountains nearby
To the northeast of it is another palagonite cone called Lýklafell (571 m). To the east between the two mountains is a hill called Dauðmannshóll (German: Totermannhügel ). It is said that the name comes from the fact that a man named Grímur Bergfjörð disappeared in this area at the turn of the year 1882 and 1883.
Folk tale venue
A folk tale tells of a troll in a fan coat. Every year he stole a horse from the farmer who harvested the hay on the nearby Egilsáfangi meadow . Only in the 19th year did the troll lose interest in such pranks.
Hiking on the mountain
The hike starts at the cairn Beinakerling on the Kaldialur, from there it is about 4 km in relatively flat terrain to the mountain. The easiest ascent is from the southwest side along a striking gorge.
