Life

At the age of two, Fanny Meissner moved with her family to Vienna , where her father, the German studies specialist and later Imperial and Royal Government Councilor Josef Diemer, who had become known for finding and editing the German poems of the 11th and 12th centuries , became head of the Imperial and Royal University Library in Vienna .

Meissner began early to publish reviews in periodicals. On September 19, 1863, she married Leopold Florian Meissner († April 29, 1895), police commissioner, later court attorney, longtime mayor of Währing and writer. The marriage remained childless.

social commitment

In 1882, Meissner founded the Währing-Hernal-Ottakring branch of the Red Cross , of which she also became president, and the local women's group of the German School Association in Währing, of which she was the head of the local women's and girls' group in Währing. She was president of the Relief Society of the Red Cross and secretary of the women's local group "Inner City Vienna" of the school society. In 1896 Meissner joined the committee of the Vienna Women's Employment Association.

In 1897 Meissner was a delegate of the Patriotic Aid Association at the International Conference of the Red Cross in Vienna. She also organized the funds for a reserve hospital through elite balls, picnics and events. When Leopold Florian Meissner became seriously ill, he dictated his memories to his wife (published by Reclam in 1892 under the title From the papers of a police inspector ). After his death, the widow published the Christmas games written by her husband, which were very well known in Vienna at the time .

Franziska Meissner's own journalistic work began with publications, partly after lectures she had given for the Red Cross and the German School Association. Nursing during the war and the assistance of women from the earliest times to the Treaty of Geneva and The German elementary school in its beginnings up to Maria Theresia and Frederick the Great were published by the "German Association for the Dissemination of Public Benefit Knowledge" in Prague. In addition, Meissner wrote political, sometimes historical, articles for Vienna daily and weekly papers and published in calendars, yearbooks etc. for patriotic and educational associations.

Meissner also dealt with the legal situation of women in Austria and gave the lecture "Women's rights in Austria" on September 25, 1896 at the 1st International Women's Congress in Berlin.
