history

Radio Fantasy Raeren

Fantasy Dance FM 96.7 emerged in 2001 from the radio station Radio Fantasy Raeren (RFR) . Radio Fantasy was founded in 1984 and went on the air in January 1985. It was broadcast on the frequency 105.9 MHz until the program changed to Fantasy Dance FM. In 2001 the first official slogan called '' We play it first '' was also added to the program. Before, among others, '' Most of the music '', There's something in it '' and '' We play hits '' were unofficial slogans of Radio Fantasy .

Radio Benelux

RFR, in turn, had its roots in Belgium's first German-speaking private station , Radio Benelux (BNL) . Radio Benelux was started on July 18, 1981 on 101.0 MHz as a local station in the attic of the Baraque Michel restaurant, the second highest point in Belgium in the High Fens . This enabled the program - despite a restriction to 100 watts and exclusively in mono due to Belgian legislation - to be received in part as far as Cologne and Düsseldorf (with appropriate receivers). Since the monopoly in Germany at that time still lay with public service broadcasting and this was seen as boring, especially by younger listeners, Radio Benelux had a large number of listeners in western North Rhine-Westphalia . By exploiting this loophole in the law, Radio Benelux was seen as a kind of pirate station in West Germany , but the German authorities had no action against the station. The radio presenter Wolfgang Roth started here.

Program scheme

The old radio Fantasy Raeren first broadcast one hour of programming every week and then every day at 7 p.m. After several years, there were daily broadcasts that then served a wider audience. In addition to current pop music in the evening, a lot of German hits were played, especially in the morning. In the end, the station played almost exclusively current hits from the club sector ( techno , dance , trance , house , hardstyle , happy hardcore , black music , hip-hop , contemporary R&B , soul ). The station made a name for itself in the region mainly because it broadcast live from the Haus Waldesruh discos (also known as Himmerich ) in Randerath and Starfish in Aachen, while the local disc jockeys moderated. The station is now known as the publisher or namesake of its own compilation Fantasy Dance Hits , on which you can find new hits from the programs of the two discos.

In contrast to the other private and public broadcasters in the region, Fantasy Dance FM carried no news, no traffic reports and relatively little advertising. In addition to a lot of music, there was cross-regional information and training positions were arranged.

Off for the transmitter

Fantasy Dance FM 96.7 was already on the brink of extinction at the beginning of 2011. Ostbelgien had not extended the license to operate the transmitter. The radio station, which was originally viewed as a pirate station, has since no longer been legal from a Belgian point of view. The regional connection was missing and the transmission power is said to have been massively increased. These and other errors were mentioned by the authorities. At the end of Carnival 2020, exactly on February 26th, 2020 around 7:30 pm, the station was switched off after a live broadcast and the band “Scooter” had the title "Hyper Hyper" as the last song. The managing director of Fantasy Dance FM Udo Menke justified the end: “Due to the fact that the media council of Ostbelgien has re-coordinated the radio frequencies, the station is no longer profitable”.

The private Radio Contact has registered interest in the excellent VHF frequency 96.7 MHz . The program Radio Contact - Ostbelgien Now should then be broadcast there.
