History and architecture
The Far des Cap de ses Salines was built by Emili Pou y Bonet and put into operation on August 31, 1863. The building land belonged to the Marquès del Palmer , who ceded the compensation owed to the state. The building consists of a cylindrical tower with a lantern and a double gallery . It is painted white and has yellow-brown decorative strips. The lantern has a gray- metallized appearance and originally contained a mirror lens with a diameter of 30 centimeters from the Paris company Henry-LePaute. Two seamen were responsible for maintaining the tower.
In 1917 an acetylene lighting system was installed. It emitted a 3 + 1 flash through a system of panels rotating around the lens. A Fresnel lens VI. Order was built in 1957 and when switching to electrical energy, the identifier changed to 3 + 1 flashes every 10 seconds. The tower was also rebuilt, increased by 6.5 meters and provided with the double gallery. With an experiment that failed due to changing winds, an attempt was made to operate the system temporarily with wind energy. In 1980 the lighthouse was the first in Spain to be supplied with solar energy .
On the side of the tower are a few outbuildings that house the classrooms of the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA).
