Farpoint is a first person shooter from the US independent game developer Impulse Gear for the PlayStation 4 , which requires the possession of a virtual reality headset . In the video game , the player controls the figures with the dual Hock 4 or, alternatively, with the specially for PSVR developed target controller . The game was first presented at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016 in Los Angeles and was released worldwide on May 17, 2017. The publisher is Sony Interactive Entertainment .

The two scientists Dr. Grant Moon and Dr. Eva Tyson explore a mysterious energy cloud in space. Gameplay

At Farpoint is a first-person shooter in which the player can move freely in the game world and fights with various weapons such as shotgun, assault rifle, plasma gun or mandrel launcher against humanoid and mechanical enemies. The aim is to track down video messages from the missing scientists in order to find their whereabouts. It is controlled either with the DualShock-4 controller or with the target controller . Randy Nolta, the art director and co-founder of Impulse Gear , sums up the advantages that the optional accessories offer the player in an interview: "The interaction with the PS VR target controller was really important to us," says Randy. “We built in a fun, gesture-based movement that lets you switch weapons by reaching behind your back. We wanted you to feel like you're in a paintball match or a similar game while playing - where you react to your surroundings, take cover from enemies, look around the corner, just like in real life . The reviews of the game's release were mostly positive. At Metacritic , Farpoint achieved a rating of 71/100 points, based on 62 reviews from the international trade press. The reviews particularly emphasize the impressive VR experience, which, in combination with the target controller, creates a feeling of being right in the middle of it while playing. The graphics engine and the interesting setting are also praised. The game has received criticism from the trade press because of the limited scope of the game and the lack of motivation to re-explore areas that have already been visited.
