history

In September 1999, the company e.Biscom was founded in Milan as a holding company and several companies operating under its roof, including Fastweb, which was responsible for telecommunications services. The aim of e.Bescom was to develop a completely new generation of data transmission technology as an alternative to traditional means of telecommunications.

In the first few months after it was founded, an extensive fiber optic network was laid in the greater Milan area. In order to finance growth and to expand the fiber optic network to the most important Italian cities, the company went public on the Milan stock exchange in the Nuovo Mercato segment, the market for young companies , in March 2000 .

In 2001, e.Biscom was the first provider worldwide to launch fully IP -based broadband, voice and TV services, which were further expanded in 2002. In 2003, e.Biscom expanded its TV services with the live broadcast of the football matches of the Italian championship via IPTV . The video on demand and the entire TV offer were also transmitted via ADSL for customers who were not connected to the fiber optic network . In 2003, e.Biscom was the first telecommunications company worldwide to achieve triple play , i.e. H. the bundled offering of TV, Internet and telephone services.

In June 2003, the shares of e.Biscom were included in the FTSE MIB index, which contains the 40 most important listed companies in Italy.

In December 2004, as part of a reorganization, e.Biscom and Fastweb merged under the company name Fastweb. The aim was to complete the previously initiated focus on the core business , i.e. the provision of broadband-based multimedia fixed network services in Italy. Since then, Fastweb has been on an impressive expansion course and has risen to become the second largest fixed network operator and the leading provider of IP-based telecommunications services in Italy.

Takeover by Swisscom

In May 2007, the Swiss telecommunications group Swisscom took control of Fastweb with a share of 82.2 percent. The aim of this acquisition is to strengthen Swisscom by further developing the Swisscom infrastructure, offering broadband-based multimedia applications and the expected increase in sales and earnings. Fastweb will remain an independent company and Fastweb's operational business will continue to be managed separately.

In September 2010 Swisscom announced that it would like to buy the remaining shares in Fastweb.
