Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay (often abbreviated as FJC , born October 25, 1957 ) is a Gambian politician .

Life

Jahumpa-Ceesay is the daughter of Ibrahima Momodou Garba-Jahumpa , who held various ministerial positions, and half-sister of Bala Garba-Jahumpa , the former Foreign Minister of the Gambia. She was married to the politician Sulayman Masanneh Ceesay , who died in 2015 .

She first attended the Crab Island Junior Secondary School in Banjul , later the Armitage High School in Janjanbureh and the Gambia High School in Banjul, which she graduated in 1977. She then took part in various further training courses in the field of journalism before working as a spokesperson for Radio Gambia and in 1993 for Gambia Airways . As a freelancer, she wrote for the Daily Observer and The Point Newspaper .

Political career

In 1985, she was a councilor in the Banjul City Council appointed and in 1989 became the first female Assistant ( Deputy Mayor ) in Banjul. From 1997 to 2002 she was Director of the Press and Public Relations Office of President Yahya Jammeh . In 2002 she was appointed a member of the National Assembly for the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction by the President.

In addition, she was sent as the Gambian representative to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and the Parliament of the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS), where she was deputy spokesperson. As part of her activities there, she was primarily active as an election observer.

In 2007 she was reappointed to the National Assembly and appointed Speaker of the Parliament. With that she succeeded Belinda Bidwell . In June 2009 the nomination to the National Assembly was revoked by the President, so that she lost her position as Speaker of Parliament. After her, Elizabeth Renner took over this office. In the following years she moved to Dakar .

At the beginning of January 2017, she asked Jammeh in an open letter to recognize the result of the presidential elections he lost in Gambia in 2016 . In February 2018 she announced the founding of her own party.

She is the holder of the Order of the Republic of The Gambia as a medal (2000) and at the level of Commander (2009).
