Fausto De Stefani
Fausto De Stefani (born March 11, 1952 in Asola ) is an Italian extreme mountaineer .
He is the sixth person, and the second Italian after Reinhold Messner , who has climbed all eight-thousanders on earth, which he succeeded in the period from 1983 to 1998, but is not generally recognized. De Stefani and Sergio Martini claimed to have climbed Lhotse in 1998 , but there was a storm on the day of the ascent and the summit photo was not sufficiently clear and precise. A few days later, another climber claimed he saw the two Italians stop before the summit, so De Stefani’s record does not appear on the official lists.
De Stefani started climbing when he was eighteen. In 1972 he became a regional instructor for rock and ice climbing for the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). For ten years he moved mainly in the western and central Alps, where he opened up new paths. At the age of twenty-nine, he became the CAI's national mountaineering instructor in 1981.
Since 1981 he has been interested in the Himalayas and the Karakoram . Its first eight-thousander was the K2 in 1983 . He climbed all the highest peaks in the world one by one. All climbs, with the exception of Everest in 1996, were accomplished in the alpine style without the use of additional oxygen.
In 1988 he was one of the founding members of the international association Mountain Wilderness , for which he has been internationally responsible since 1993, and he organized the Free K2 campaign , the removal of tons of waste from previous expeditions.
He has also traveled on various humanitarian initiatives in Nepal and elsewhere. He is an environmentalist and nature photographer and has a collection of around 15,000 slides, some of which have been shown in various European cities.
