The Fautaua (also: Fautua) is a river in the north of the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia .

geography

The river has its source in the center of the island in the gorges on the north side of Mont Orohena and flows to the northwest, where it crosses the island's capital Papeete and flows into the Pacific in the area of Mont Faiere . The river forms a deep valley of the same name and the Cascade de Fautaua (also: Cascade de Fachoda , ), which ranks 28th in the list of the highest waterfalls with a drop of almost 300 m . The waterfall pours into a small basin, in which you can also swim and which is named after the writer Pierre Loti Bain Loti . The name "Cascade de Fachoda" goes back to the dilapidated Fort Fachoda that stood at the height of the falls. In the lower reaches of the river, Avenue Pierre Loti follows the course of the river to the coast.

The waterfall can be reached by hiking, but you have to purchase a permit. The hike is given as 3–6 hours.
