Fearer was a German death metal band from Emden , which was founded in 1995 and disbanded in 2006.

history

The band was founded in 1995 by the guitarist and singer Tom Zorn and the guitarist Frank Spinka. Both had previously worked for Vomiting Corpses . A few months later, bassist Carsten Kleen and drummer Alf Kluge joined the line-up. Kleen joined the band six months after it was founded and had known Zorn since elementary school. He was also with Vomiting Corpses when Zorn joined this group in 1993. Kleen also suggested the name Fearer during a rehearsal. In the summer of 1996, the band went into the studio to record a first demo called Mindless , which included four songs. In addition, the first local appearances followed. The demo was only distributed among friends and among the members themselves. In mid-1997 Spinka left the band and was replaced by Dennis Eickenhard towards the end of the year. In 1998 the EP followed under the name No Tomorrow , which was released to friends and at concerts and of which about 50 copies were made before the debut album No Compromise was released in autumn 2000 . Of this, only 80 units stood out. The songs were recorded at Audiocheck Musicproductions . In the meantime, Eickenhard had been replaced by Jens Bruns. In January 2001 the guitarist Matze Wiltfang replaced Jens Bruns. In the same year No Compromise was re-recorded at Audiocheck Musicproductions Studio, with one song being replaced by a new one. The resulting material was released in the same year as an album under the name The Grinning Face of Death . In the fall of 2001, the band took the album Confession to Hate again in the Audiocheck Musicproductions Studio, where songs from The Grinning Face of Death were used. After the existing song material had been remastered and mixed again in 2002 in the Mega Wimp Sound Studio in Berlin , the album Confession to Hate was released on Remission Records in 2002 . The record version of the album was released in a limited edition by Autopsy Stench Records . The same label released two more albums in 2003 and 2005 with Descent and Backfire . In 2005 the group also appeared at Up from the Ground and Fuck the Commerce, among others . Backfire should be the last album with drummer Alf Kluge. Since the remaining members could not find a suitable replacement, they announced the breakup of the band in mid-2006.

style

Frank Stöver from voicesfromthedarkside.de described the band's music as fast and brutal death metal in the American style. In an interview with Stöver, Tom Zorn named bands like Death , Benediction , Incubus , Massacre , Dismember , Malevolent Creation and Bolt Thrower as influences. In his review of The Grinning Face of Death , Ramon Claassen, who also works for voicesfromthedarkside.de , stated that the band plays aggressive Death Metal that does not get boring or monotonous. Metal Hammer's Anzo Sadoni noted in his review of Descent that the band is sonically similar to Bolt Thrower. The music not only sounds like this band, but Tom Zorn's vocals also sound like Dave Ingram . The singing also has parallels to John Tardy . Similar to Bolt Thrower, Fearer also tries to combine heaviness with melodies. In a later issue, Sadoni reviewed the album Backfire and found that the album, like the previous one, " skilfully varied between groove and blast". The Bolt Thrower influence is now less present, instead it sounds more like Malevolent Creation. The singing is again very versatile and reminds of John Tardy.
