The Fencing Fountain ( Fontanna Szermierz in Polish ) in Breslau is a monument created by Hugo Lederer between 1901 and 1904 and unveiled on November 26, 1904.

location

The fountain is located on University Square on the south-east side of the University of Wroclaw .

execution

The monument consists of a circular marble basin , in the middle of which is a marble plinth with two sculptures of seated, naked women. They carry a marble bowl with four masks on the side with water flowing out of their mouths . The life-size bronze fountain figure created by Lederer depicts a naked youth . He has a foil in his right hand . The left hand is supported on the hip .

Copies

A reduced copy of the fencer's figure (without the fountain) was made in 1903 by the foundry Aktiengesellschaft formerly Hermann Gladenbeck in Berlin-Friedrichshagen. The figure, executed in patinated bronze, is 91.5 cm high.

There is also a life-size copy of the fencer's figure. This was created by Lederer in 1923 on behalf of the then General Director Carl Duisberg of Bayer AG . Today the figure stands in front of the Kurt-Riess-Sportanlage in Leverkusen -Küppersteg.

Trivia

  • The figure of the fencer was popularly known as "Saber Juerge". It is a play on words , initiated by the Neptune Fountain on the Neumarkt in Wroclaw, whose figure was called the "fork juerge" after the fork held by Neptune in his hand.
  • The water-spouting figures are said to be portraits of Wroclaw professors .
  • Gilded (reduced) copies of the figure are awarded by the University of Wroclaw to deserving sponsors of the university as a token of recognition.
  • Legend has it that Lederer was made drunk as a student in Wroclaw and lost all of his clothes except for his weapon in a card game. The memorial he created later is therefore a warning against excessive alcohol consumption.
  • The fencer supports the tip of the weapon on the ground in front of his legs, so the blade is slightly bent. However, it happens again and again that the weapon is bent or even stolen.
