history

Local historians date the first evidence of the Feckerchilbi to the 16th century. Its beginnings and roots can only be guessed at from individual documents. According to legend, the independent small republic of Gersau is said to have consistently expelled the traveling people from their country all year round. Because the influx of showmen made sense for their parish fair and so as not to anger the traveling people unduly, the traveling people were not only tolerated on the parish fair , but also traditionally entertained.

Newspaper report from 1830

In the "Waldstätter Boten" of June 22, 1830 there is a contemporary description. It shows that this meeting was a kind of Yenish state parliament , where, in addition to dancing and festivities, political discussion also had its place: “On the Saturday, Sunday and Monday after the local church fair, the crooks (called Fecker in Gersau) are not allowed to be turned away by the police become; they then hold their state parliament, which is very numerous. During these three days these people behave impeccably; Arguments, bickering, theft are something unheard of (...). On the Sunday after the service, they gathered according to the old custom, the country hunters at their head, and went from house to house to beg for a church dedication. (...) After the move was over, they returned to their hiding spots and there was lively dancing in the barns. The older men retired to a Gaden to deliberate the affairs of the wandering republic. "

Prohibition of Feckerchilbi 1832

After the involuntary incorporation of the traditionally autonomous and free Republic of Gersau on Lake Lucerne into the Canton of Schwyz in 1817, after the cellar trade in 1824/27 and after the political, military and police enforcement of a cantonal central administration in the wake of regional disputes in the state of Schwyz around 1832 / 33, the Feckerchilbi had been abolished.

Contemporary witness report 1864

Government councilor Camenzind from Gersau, in his retrospective account of the Yenish meeting, which was abolished for over 30 years at that time, pointed out to other aspects of the Feckerchilbi: “At the usual church consecration, held since 1722 on the first Sunday after the Ascension of Christ, people were close and remote vagabonds of all kinds with women and children, a hundred to two hundred in number, in Gersau. " He also mentions the begging parade, but adds: “After this move, they returned to their headquarters, changed their clothes in order to appear as" dressed up "as possible, and now the general joys of Kilbi begin for them too. (...) There is a fair on Monday. The feckers also come to do their shopping, and truly, they are not the worst buyers. " The Schwyz government councilor does not want to grant Feckerchilbi a political function as a meeting or "state parliament" for travelers, but instead mentions the function of the Yenish " grandfather ": "A grandfather chosen by them maintains order and there are very seldom disputes." Then he continues: «On Tuesday the Fecker had to leave the country again, otherwise the police would take them away. (...) In the 1830s, when the police were more strict, the Feckerkilbi was abolished; meanwhile, individual couples appeared for a long time to take part in the general parish fair. "

Feckerchilbi in the 20th century

When in the 1980s a Gersau festival committee wanted to hold a Feckerchilbi again for the anniversary of the republic, the Gersau residents had to obtain approval from the government council of the canton of Schwyz, because the ban of 1848 was never lifted. The Yeniche and the Gersauers tried together to build on the old traditions. So some fecker chilbles took place in loose succession, in the contemporary version naturally organized with an OK from village notables and a Yenish advisory board. At the Feckerchilbi itself, however, there was not much of it to be felt: "The many pieces of music and the infamous Fecker coffee brought the anarchic joys of earlier times back to life". Werner Stauffacher , central secretary of pro juventute , also took part in the Feckerchilbi 1982 and apologized to the travelers. At Feckerchilbi 2003, the district council wrote: "The event is also in the interests of Gersau itself. With a new edition of Fekkerchilbi, Gersau will be remembered beyond the region as a cosmopolitan, tolerant holiday and adventure location. A successful Fekkerchilbi has a signal effect for further events in Gersau. In this respect, the reintroduction is in line with the objectives of the business plan adopted by Gersau to promote Gersau as a tourist and commercial location. "

The Feckerchilben of the 20th century followed closely the traditions. For example, the Yeniche determined an old father again. From 1982 to 2003 Clemente Graff, a co-founder of the Radgenossenschaft der Landstrasse and one of the first victims of children of the Landstrasse , held this office. The Yeniche presented old handicrafts and their contemporary livelihoods at the three-day Feckermarkt. B. as an antique dealer. The entertainment program was played by musicians such as Häns'che Weiss , Mario Feurer ( Minstrels , Trio Grande), Baschi Bangerter (Baschi's Scharotl), Tschawo Minster (Latsche Tschawe), circus and jugglers groups such as Circus Rigolo, Schönauer's Broadway Variété and Arno Black, the Baron the juggler. However, contemporary things were not neglected in the new Feckerchilben either. Panel discussions, thematic traveling exhibitions and readings by female writers brought the concerns of today's travelers closer to the audience. In 1985 the Yeniche moved from Gersau to Lucerne , where they carried out the first Yeniche political demonstration with their caravan next to the Verkehrshaus to draw attention to the lack of parking spaces. In 2010, alongside musicians performing traditional music such as gypsy jazz or Schwyzerörgli music , rappers appeared for the first time in Brienz with the singers Syntax and No Mad . The two musicians from Paris call their music "Rap Manouche ". At the Feckerchilbi 2016 in Bern, Federal Councilor Alain Berset was the guest speaker . In his speech, Federal Councilor Berset said: "You - Yeniche and Sinti - are recognized as a national minority." In 2018, the Feckerchilbi, organized by the Radgenossenschaft der Landstrasse, took place for the first time in western Switzerland in the city of Freiburg / Friborg.
