Federico Borromeo (also: Federico IV. Borromeo Count of Arona , born May 29, 1617 in Milan , † February 18, 1673 in Rome ) was an Italian Catholic cardinal .

biography

Federico Borromeo was born on May 29, 1617 in Milan to the noble family Borromeo d ' Arona and was a cousin of Cardinal Giberto III. Borromeo (1654). Other members of his family were San Carlo Borromeo (1560), Federico III. Borromeo (his namesake and spiritual leader) (1587), Giberto III. Borromeo, seniore (1652), Giberto Bartolomeo Borromeo (1717), Vitaliano VII. Borromeo (1766) and Edoardo Borromeo (1868).

In Siena he studied literature and theology (1623) and received his doctorate in 1634 in utroque iure . Then he decided on the traditional costume. In 1635 he went to Rome and received the minor orders: on March 28, 1644 he was ordained a subdeacon and the following day a deacon .

Upon arriving in Rome, he was appointed chaplain to His Holiness and became a trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature . In 1643 he was appointed governor of Ascoli Piceno and then of Benevento (1646-1648). After his appointment as Inquisitor in Malta on October 25, 1652, he became secretary of the Sacra Congregazione dell'Immunità Religiosa .

On October 19, 1654, Federico was elected Titular Patriarch of Alexandria . He received the episcopal ordination from Cardinal Francesco Peretti di Montalto . He later rejected the nomination proposed in 1665 for the episcopal see of Como . From November 28, 1654 to August 20, 1665 he was in office as Apostolic Nuncio in Switzerland . On February 17, 1666 he was appointed governor of Rome and remained in office until February 26, 1668, when he was sent to Spain as apostolic nuncio , where he remained until July 1670. In May 1670 he was appointed State Secretary and held this office until his death.

He was appointed cardinal priest on December 22, 1670 , with a dispensation guaranteed by a cousin in the college of cardinals . On February 23, 1671 he received the cardinal purple and the titular church of Sant'Agostino . On August 8, 1672, he chose the title of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura . At the same time he was appointed abbot of the abbeys of Pertica ( Pavia ), San Dionigi (Milan) and Sant'Angelo in Vultu ( Melfi ).

Federico Borromeo died on February 18, 1673 in the Quirinal Palace in Rome. His body was laid out in the church of San Carlo al Corso in Rome, where he was buried at the church's altar.
