Life
Origin and early years
Giberto Borromeo was the fifth of nine children of Renato Borromeo, Conte of Arona and Marchese of Angera , and his wife Giulia Arese. Other cardinals from the same family were his uncle Giberto Borromeo the Elder , his great-nephew Vitaliano Borromeo and the distant relatives Carlo Borromeo , Federico Borromeo the Elder, Federico Borromeo the Younger and Edoardo Borromeo . His baptism took place on September 17, 1671 in the Milanese church of Sant 'Alessandro.
As he was destined for a spiritual career, he received the tonsure at the age of twelve and became Commendatar Abbot of Viboldone. His education took place from 1683 to 1690 at the seminary school of Milan, then he studied at the University of Pavia and received his doctorate there on July 7, 1691 as Doctor iuris utriusque . He studied theology in Milan, where in November 1690 he obtained the academic degree of Dr. theol. After completing his studies, he went to Rome and became Apostolic Protonotary on March 27, 1692 . He was vice- legate in Bologna from September 29, 1692 to September or October 1693 . In addition, in 1693 he became a trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . After that, because of his poor health, he retired to Milan, where he lived until 1705. During this time he made friends with Lodovico Antonio Muratori , who had already dedicated his dissertation De Graecae linguae usu et praestantia to him on July 15, 1693 and who housed Giberto Borromeo in his villa on Isola Bella and also supported him financially. Muratori dedicated the first volume of the Anecdota latina ex Ambrosianae Bibliothecae codicibus to him in 1697 .
