Federico García Vigil (born January 5, 1941 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † May 27, 2020 ) was a Uruguayan conductor and composer .

Career

García Vigil received piano training at the Conservatorio Guillermo Kolischer and studied harmony, composition and orchestration. On the basis of a scholarship from the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture, he also learned orchestral leadership with Simón Blech in Buenos Aires in 1971 . In the same year he made his way to Europe. There he stayed at the invitation of the French Embassy in Strasbourg at the National Music Conservatory and at the Paris University, where he worked with Jean-Sebastian Bereau and Pierre Stoll respectively . In 1973 he was awarded first prize in orchestral conducting in Strasbourg. At the invitation of the government, he also attended the conducting schools in Germany and Great Britain.

García Vigil has been the permanent ensemble director of the City of Montevideo, the National Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and permanent director of the Bogotá Symphony Orchestra . From 1985 to 1990 he also held the position of Artistic Director of the Municipal Symphony Orchestra of Montevideo. Between 1993 and 2008 he was chief conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Montevideo . He also taught at the Universidad de la República . García Vigil was married to the ballet dancer Olga Bérgolo .
