The field maple moth ( Eupithecia inturbata ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the flyers (Geometridae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 13 to 18 millimeters. The basic color of all wings is gray to brownish gray. The apex of the forewings is pointed. The transverse lines are created twice on the outer edge of the disk region . The discoid spot on the upper side of the forewing is black and punctiform. The hind wings are slightly lightened in the basal region and have a distinct black-brown border on the front and underside. The fringes on all wings are piebald.

Caterpillar, pupa

Young caterpillars are solid green, fully grown caterpillars are stocky and smooth, greenish in color and show a rust-brown pattern on their backs. The yellow-brown pupa is provided with greenish wing sheaths. There are eight hooked bristles of equal length on the button-shaped cremaster .

Similar species

The willow- bloom moth ( Eupithecia tenuiata ) differs primarily in the strongly rounded shape of the apex of the forewings and the weaker border line on the underside of the hind wing. A reliable determination can be carried out by means of a genital morphological examination.

Distribution and occurrence

The distribution of the species extends from Spain through western and central Europe including the British Isles and further east to Russia . In the north the area extends up to the 62nd parallel . Due to the sparse distribution of the host plant in the southern countries of Europe, the species is rare or absent there. The field maple moth populates primarily mixed forests, forest edges, mountain slopes and quarries.

Way of life

Blossom of the field maple,
the main food of the caterpillars

The main flight time of the crepuscular and nocturnal moths falls in the months of July and August. For food intake, they have been observed sucking sugary excretions from aphids . The moths like to visit artificial light sources . The eggs are laid in cracks in the bark on the branches of the food plant. The egg hibernates. The caterpillars hatch in the following spring, live from mid-April to late May and feed on the flowers of the field maple ( Acer campestre ) in Fennoscandia sometimes from the Norway maple ( Acer platanoides ). Pupation takes place on the ground.

Danger

The field maple moth occurs locally and rarely in the individual federal states in Germany and is included in the red list of endangered species "on the warning list".
