The Feldbachtal nature reserve with a size of 105.19 hectares is located in the urban area of Remscheid . The area was designated as a nature reserve (NSG) with an area of 190 hectares by ordinance by the Düsseldorf administrative district on December 30, 1994 . On November 14, 2003, the Remscheid-Ost landscape plan was again designated by the city of Remscheid, whereby the protected area was reduced by approx. 85 hectares. The NSG borders directly on the Schneppendahler Siepen nature reserve in the north and on the Feldbach pre-dam of the Wuppertal dam in the east . The Hofschaft Oberfeld Bach is located in the NSG. The NSG is the second largest nature reserve in the city of Remscheid.

Area description

The NSG is a characteristic notch valley of the Bergisches Land with its secondary depths and source areas and forest areas adjacent to the south. It partly has the character of an open meadow valley with wet meadow complexes.

The Feldbach in the NSG is mostly straightened and in places also close to nature. Most of the banks of the stream were fenced off. The fenced off areas have tall herbaceous corridors. Wet meadows and pastures have recently been piped at the crossing points of paths along the stream. There are occasional occurrences of narrow-leaved cotton grass in such wet grassland. The floodplain is mostly used as pasture and to a lesser extent as a meadow. In front of the confluence of the Feldbach in the Feldbach-Vorsperre there is a larger wetland. This formed after removing a spruce stand. In the wet wasteland there are two small bodies of water with shallow water zones. In open land areas there are occasional rows of trees, groups of trees and fallow lean grassland. In the northern part of the NSG there are fat pastures, fat meadows and fields with groups of trees and field trees. There are orchards in the NSG on the edge of the neighboring villages.

A beech forest bordering the Feldbach floodplains to the south is also used as pasture. The ridge and the slopes south of the Feldbach valley and some areas north of the stream are predominantly covered by spruce forest and mixed spruce forest. Larger areas are also occupied by oak forests with a higher proportion of pines. These oak forests are comparatively light and have a closed herb layer. In this forest area there are smaller former quarries. In parts of the forest areas, beech forest, beech-oak forest, mixed oak forest with hardwoods such as cherry and maple, mixed birch forest with conifers, hornbeam forest and mixed larch forest. A few years ago, the age of trees ranged from young stands to stands of over 80 years. There are holly trees in the forest . On a knoll under a high-voltage line there is a small-scale heather.

Protection purpose

The landscape plan explains the protection purpose: “The protection designation takes place in particular to maintain the characteristic Kerbtal, its secondary depths and source areas. A quiet retreat and regeneration area for sensitive, disturbance-sensitive animal species should be preserved within the area around the Wuppertal Reservoir, which is characterized by intensive recreational use. In addition, the designation serves to maintain and restore a near-natural stream system with its typical flora and fauna. Furthermore, the following structures and habitats in particular, together with their specific communities, must be preserved and secured: valley-side habitats, including for amphibians and birds, extensively used meadows and pastures, fallow meadows, near-natural forest areas.
